Are you talking about that burning smell when you turn on your furnace for the first time of the season? If you are then that is just dust burning off the surface of the heat exchanger that has collected over the summer months. That is normal.

Smell could be excessive gas build up prior to ignition.
Smell could be dust/insect/cleaning residue burning off.
