Just set the temp to what you like. When we use our fireplace we put a box fan in the hallway to pull the heat down to the bedrooms. We keep the temp set at the same, that way when the house is no longer heated from the firepace the heater will kick on at it's normal setting. You have to set your thermostat at what ever temp you feel comfortable. I would not be cold unless I can't afford to be warm. Maybe you could put a fan on your gas heater to help circulate the air.
