They do hang them, and they do verify what the temperature is by building a fire and testing......
So, fire it up on a cooler evening, and put thermometers where you want it hung to measure the ambient temperature...
If it gets over 120, then it's time to get a heat shield for your plasma....Check your local Fireplace specialists, they should have that, or get you in touch with one, OR select a HOME THEATER SPECIALIST to work with....
I have seen the newer ones that are enclosed not even need a heat shield....I can only assume you have one of the older ones that actually HEAT the home instead of looking pretty....
KNOWING the temperature of the fireplace AND the operating temperature of your Plasma produces SOLUTIONS !!
Not knowing produces Broken/Damaged TVs.....I'll bet a lot of guys just hang them with a screw, thinking "YeeHAW...I saved me some BEER dough! Glug glug...."
Then they pop and crack and the Beer Drinkers say "Don't do it....I did..."
I've seen rich, wealthy landowners with plasmas running over a fully operational fireplace filled with apple wood and oak....

I once hung a glass framed picture above a fireplace with electric fire below. broke the glass when frame expanded and contracted. cost me to replace it. not as much as a plasma screen though.

it depends really on how often you are going to use the fireplace, if it is not used very often then yes you can hang a plasma or lcd above a electric or gas fire.
i definitely wouldn't advise putting it above a open fire as smoke and dust can cause serious damage to the TV and its lifespan.

They kick off a lot of heat in their own right, and more is likely to be an issue.
The dust coming from most fireplaces will shorten the life of your TV too.

Heat is the number one enemy of electronics. I would not put a very expensive TV (or any TV) over a fireplace.
That seems to be the trend these days, with the ability to hang the set on the wall. It is not a good idea.

Well make sure it is far from the fire, because the fire will eventually damage your TV. This happened to me once, and it cost me a pretty penny
