Painting A Tiled Fireplace Surround?

I want to update my 40 year old Fireplace as economically as possible. It has a (horrid) grey tiled surround with mantel and hearth and am going to get a new Electric Fire put in (one that looks like a real coal fire).
Is it possible to paint over the tiles ?
