Opinions Please About Electric Fireplaces, Have You Got One?
I keep looking at electric fireplaces, the one I am looking at now heats 400 sq. feet. My gas bill is very high, and I am thinking if I had one in the LR I could turn down the heat until I go to bed and still be comfortable.
A gas fireplace these days is just a money burner.
And some look quite nice now, it would be great to have a mantle at xmas time to decorate. Nicer than an electric space heater sitting in the room. (I’m a Libra I’m fussy about my environment)
Have you got one? Ever had one? Was it a worthwhile purchase?

I recently got one, it looks incredible! I don’t use mine as much because where I live, electricity is more expensive than gas; maybe it’s different for you. I will say that when I do have it on, it does produce decent heat. Just make sure you buy a good one, a little more expensive at first but it’ll sure save you on electricity in the long run.

If you want affordable and effective heating you should look into forced convection heaters. They don’t look as good as electric fireplaces or have the same area heating capabilities but they are far cheaper to buy and run. If you are looking to heat a room that is less than 30 m sq I would go with a fan heater.
Oh, I just reread the question. Space heaters are out then! The moon must have positioned itself differently when you were born because I am a Libra who can suffer convection heating ; )

Isotope – if memory serves me correctly – I believe you live in Canada. If this is true then we would be comparing applies and oranges! I live in the southern half of the USA – electricity here is VERY HIGH – so no I would not have one. Homes heated by gas have it even worse pricewise! As for getting good deals on items because the economy is in a recession – think about it – the fireplace may be cheap, but the electricity just might eat you out of house AND home!

I don’t know if electric heat is cheaper than gas heat, but it is cheaper than oil. I have used one for supplementary heat to save money on oil and it has added ambiance to the room as well.
I bought mine at the end of the winter season last year and got it for 75% off the regular price….a great buy.

We got an absolute beauty at Costco
it looks so beautiful. It has a 5ft mantle. We only have a 900 sq ft house
2 bedrooms and 1 bath but we shut off the gas and it heats the whole house(we do have to leave the bathroom door open most of the time)
This one cost us around 600.dollars but my sister got a pretty one for around 200.00 at Wal-mart!

My sister-in-law has an electric fire place and she says it really heats up her house. She swears by it.
