Just Bought An Electric Fire – Is It Cheaper Than Running A Gas Fire?
Hi, I’ve just bought one of those “modern” black glass wall mounted electric fires. It is a compromise with my husband and we thought if we went for this one, it would look very nice and as it sits on the wall it does away with the need for the whole fireplace surround/mantlepiece. You can run it just on the flame effect for as cheap as a lamp but I wondered if you had it on for heat too, would it be more expensive to run than a gas fire?

It’s probably going to work out about the same. A lot of people assume electricity will be cheaper, because they heat their homes with gass….they figure 600 or so every two months to heat their house, electricity must be cheaper, right? Then when they switch they see their electric bill go up 300 a month… It’s up to you. You’re going to pay through the nose either way. Best to just throw on a thick sweater, heavy socks and a blanket and tough it out.

It would be cheaper, with the immense cost of gas here, (dont know how cheap gas is in america, but you can be sure its at least 4x more expensive here) and the relatively cheap cost of electric, it would work out cheaper

Must depend where you live – Perth – Australia gas would be cheaper if you had piped gas.
