Is It Worth It To Use A Fireplace For Some Extra Heat.?
I have a large double wide home that has a factory installed fireplace. I have heard that it is hardly worth the effort to burn it because all the heat goes up the chimney and in some cases you can actually loose heat because it draws the heated room air in and it goes up the chimney as well. The fireplace has an electric blower but I don’t feel any difference when I use it. Do you think these fireplaces were made just for looks or are they truly functional and can they help with heating.

fireplaces are great to look at and romantic too. but they do suck the heat out of the room and your home. we usually use ours for pleasure or when we entertain. the only way fireplaces warm the room is when you use it for days 24/7. then, the fireplace surround (stone mantel) will heat up and radiat heat.

moble homes are not insulated very well and are hard to heat no matter the sourse.
if the flues and dampers are not positioned correctly then you will not generate much heat. the blower should produse a very noticable diffrence. just get some wood and see it it works out for you. using a ceiling fan can help to circulate the warmth arroung the house if it has a resevse setting to pull the air up.
you may want to consider getting a fireplace insert installed as this is much more efficient than an open fireplace.

For us, we have a gas heater and the fireplace has been a saving grace this year. Ours puts out a lot of heat but we are in a conventional home. I guess the only way to know for sure if it’s beneficial is to put it to a test for a period you can monitor on your utility bill. If you currently have a gas heater, this year the saving may be substantial.
