Maybe not so much better but I've heard of instances where on some models the pilot lights had gone out and there was a gas leak in the house so the electric ones might be safer

They are both rather silly, tacky and pinky. Why not buy one of these fireplace tapes or DVDs and leave the telly on all day while cranking up the central heat?

electric may be safer, but you won't get the effects from an electric fireplace as you will from a gas one,,electric fireplaces won't put out a flame or the heat that a gas fireplace will..but an electric fireplace you can plug in almost anywhere and don't have to worry about replumbing the gas lines or even a chimney if it calls for one..a lot of the new gas fireplaces you can buy now, don't need to be vented...
theres benefits to both..with an electric fireplace, you can even move the fireplace around as you do with your furniture..
hope this helped and have fun with it..

If your saying is an "electric fireplace better then using a gas (stove)" then the answer is "no"
About 85% of the heat from a fireplace goes up the chimney, no two ways about it I'm afraid to say. Elecrtic, gas or whatever.
I've kept my eye on these new "corn burners" that have been flooding the market. My son-in-laws burns better then his big furnace and throws more heat for less. One small bag of corn will burn all week and druve you out of the house, maybe worthwhile looking into.
