Buying Electric Fireplaces

How Much Will It Cost To Have My Old Wood Burning Fireplace Replace With Electric?

I have a wood burning fireplace with a very strong draft. My fireplace have a recirculating fan where the air draft is coming. In front of the fireplace are bricks which it gets cold during winter. I tried everything I could. For now, I had my fireplace covered with plastic. I still have the brick, so the living room is still cold. I want to replace it with electric fireplace, get rid of the bricks and install a mantel to dress it up. I also want to get rid of the chimney. How much will it cost me? Thanks.

Get a professional to take a look at the draft problems. There may also be a problem with the flu sealing properly. I had gas logs put in this year which operate with a remote control. Its great to turn it on and off just when I need it. If you don’t have gas to your fireplace they make them in LP too. Removing a chimney is expensive and could cause structural damage in the process. They make great looking realistic electric fireplaces now with all kinds of surrounds and mantles. I had one put in my bedroom where there was no fireplace or acess to the chimney. They have heaters in them so you can have the fire part on for ambience or turn the heater on if it’s cold. They don’t use a lot of electricity. Even with an electric you should have a pro look at your set up and tell you the best way to install it in front of the existing fireplace. It’s pretty easy to seal up drafts.

oh you have a few ideas there, but the cost will be all over the board tell you come up with a few facts about it.
age of the home. type of roof, does it go up thru the roof, is it on the foundation?
I have a idea for you. You can put in a gas fireplace for about $3000.00 labor and material. it will seal up the draft and give you a sore of heat too, and it is cheaper then electrical most of the time.
the other idea is to have someone make up a steel box, like a heatolator in the 70’s or 80’s. it will seal up the draft and you can still burn wood in it and your fan will still blow the heat back into your home if you like or you can remove the SW, and brick up the holes. Then add the mantle and enjoy the new fireplace.

Since times are getting tighter, oil, heating fuel and all are going up. Do you think it would be wise to remove such a simple form of heat and cooking as a wood fireplace?
I myself would just call in a chimney company and get a professional opinion on how to seal it up and make it operate better so its not cold. Otherwise just do some redecoration or painting to give it a new look.
I myself am trying to get off the need of electric and everything else cause soon it will be so high we can’t afford it. Plan now when you have the cash is how I see it.
Otherwise to answer… to remove a chimney, haul it away, fix the hole in roof, do the redo, purchase the new fireplace, install, run power, etc. And not seeing any of it to get real idea. I’d guess $15,000 w/o thinking.
