The starter is electric but if it has flames it is fed by propane or natural gas. There should be a shutoff valve for the gas which will kill the flames.

An electric fireplace will always have a button or knob to turn it off. Otherwise, how do you turn it on? It’s probably in a hidden spot around the unit itself. In the case you can’t find it yourself, try to find the brand/model number and look it up online. You can ask the manufacturer if you can find their phone number. Don’t use water unless you want a new hairdo. If all else fails and you don’t have time to do all this before you go to sleep, check your electrical breaker box for the switch marked “fireplace”. If it’s not marked, try all switches until you find it. Better than going up in flames.
