Fireplace Question – Any Builders Please??
I really want to install a flueless stove in my lounge. The gas point is already there but only in a false plasterboard chimney breast which i am told is not safe to house a gas stove and the heat it produces. There are also electric sockets in there as the previous owners had an electric stove plugged in. Can get another false chimney breast built lined in something that will take the heat from a stove, like brick or something? Will that be enough housing for the stove? Sorry if this is mad, but i really want to look at a gas flame and not a false electric one, but want it to be safe. Would a builder think i was mad if I requested this???? Thanks in advance.

There are clearances from the stove to plaster (your plasterboard should be plastered), these are given in the manufacturers instruction, (clearance from non combustibles), the room the appliance will be housed in has to be a certain minimum size, again, this will be in the manufacturers instructions, you also have to have ventilation, which is normally 100cm2 direct to outside, and an openable window or door. You need a corgi engineer, not a builder!

You must also install an air brick for the stove as they burn a mixture of gas and air not just gas. This is mandatory gas regulations. The brick is installe in an OUTSIDE wall.

you could ask a builder but to be quite honest if you have a false plasterboard chimney breast there i would would not want a real fire in its place. they do look nice but so do the modern plasma ones that you can get now. if you really want a real fire you would have to get rid of the plasterboard and a lot of work done. there are so many nice ones that look like the real thing that you could choose from without the hassle of ripping half your lounge down

i don’t think a builder will think you are mad ..i think the whole world-will think you are ..where do you live ?certainly not in the UK ….and remember ..ANY GAS APPLIANCE should be installed by a corgi gas fitter .. if you dont and something goes wrong you will have no insurance

You need a fireproof material to encapsule a gas fire place. Brick or stone.
