As always the less expensive the less it will look real. I have seen designers on HGTV put in beautiful options in electric presentations. Most have nothing to do with looking like a real wood fireplace but offer interesting and upscale opportunities to light up a focus wall without the traditional fireplace look. Check out your local area for stores that are dedicated to fireplaces first to see what your options are and how much they would cost. They will also offer catalogs for you to look through and can answer your questions about quality.

do electric fireplaces look real?…well they kind of do, but the better electric fireplaces are not going to be at a big box store, you really need to visit a specialty fireplace shop. Any shop worth its bricks will carry a good brand that looks more realistic.
Overall though you are not going to fool anyone that an electric fireplace is a real one. They are an aesthetic all their own.
Personally i like the look of them and they are easy to operate but they are not going to fool anybody into thinking they are real.
