Do Electric Fireplaces Actually Work?
I have radiators in my home which are heated by home heating oil. This is very expensive. I’m looking into putting in an electric fireplace with roughly 4900 BTUs in my living room and another one with roughly 4000 BTUs upstairs. Will these electric fireplaces actually help to keep my home warm or this just a waste of money?

If your home is small, then it would be fine. Remember, 4900 BTU’s is very much. So if you live in a very cold part of the country, that may not be enough to heat the home. 4900 is good for only about 500 sqft of room (to be comfortable). The home will need to be well insulated to retain the heat, and modern double pane windows are a must. With such a small BTU’s, the home won’t heat very quickly, so keep that in mind too. If the home is bigger than 1000 sqft, I’d tell you to not depend on electric heaters. The cost of electricity will eat you alive.

Yes they do work but all electric heat is expensive. If you already have radiators you might want to look at controlling the individual room temperatures even by turning down each rad when it is not being used. You can also decrease your home heating bill by simply filling in crackes with spray foam, applying foam tape to window edges and doors and using invisable clear wrap that is applied with heat to your windows. In bedroom invest in matress heating covers, they can be individually controlled for shared beds and by simply warming up the beds before turning in, you can keep the heat of your home lower.
